BCS on steroids

My colleague Matt Hinton reports that Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick says the new selection committee will release weekly rankings during latter half of the football season, like the BCS does now. The form of those rankings, like nearly everything else about this new system, is To Be Determined.

Another BCS-like thing that wouldn't surprise me at all if it occured would be if the have-nots (we can't call then non-AQs any more) demand access to at least one spot in the non-playoff bowls, if not a spot in the playoff itself, under certain conditions. Especially since it's no sure thing at all that an undefeated have-not will make a playoff on its own merits. That group now includes the Big East and is now a majority of Division I-A. Maybe Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff can tweak his antitrust lawsuit to help make it happen. Maybe we'll get more political grandstanding to force the issue. yay.

The term BCS may go away, but reports of its "death" may be a little premature.
