Source: Grizzlies to interview Bulls' assistant Pinckney

UPDATED 3:56 p.m. ET

SAN ANTONIO -- The Grizzlies have received permission to interview Bulls assistant Ed Pinckney for their head coaching vacancy, league sources told

Pinckney, a former Big East star and assistant coach at Villanova, has impressed the Memphis front office with the work he's done in Chicago under defensive mastermind Tom Thibodeau. Pinckney, 50, also spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Timberwolves.

The Grizzlies have spoken with former Nuggets coach George Karl and former Suns coach Alvin Gentry on the phone and plan to have them in for interviews in the next few days, sources said. The team also will interview assistant coach Dave Joerger. Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw -- interviewing with the Nets on Wednesday -- is not on the Grizzlies' list. Shaw also is a top candidate for the Clippers' head coaching job.

Memphis gave Lionel Hollins permission to speak with other teams and on Monday announced that they will not offer him a new contract. Hollins led the Grizzlies to 56 wins and a trip to the Western Conference finals this season, the last on his contract. Hollins is interviewing with the Clippers this week and also is high on the Nuggets' list of potential replacements for Karl.

Also, as reported by USA Today, league sources confirm that the Grizzlies have received permission to interview Nets executive Milton Lee for a front-office position. Memphis GM Chris Wallace is in the running to become GM of the Sacramento Kings. A decision on a new GM is expected from the Kings' new ownership group in the coming days.
