TAMPA, Fla. -- Leave it to the ever classy Mariano Rivera to produce a new twist on the tradition of farewell tours.
And heads up if you live somewhere other than New York and intend to catch the Sandman and the Yankees on the road this summer.
Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo says Rivera has asked the club to find “special people” in each ballpark the team will visit this summer for him to personally thank.
It might be an usher who has been escorting baseball fans to their seats for 30 or 40 years, Zillo says. Perhaps it will be a “family of five who make a three-hour drive to Minnesota once every season."
“They don't have to be Mariano Rivera fans, and they don't have to be Yankees fans,” Zillo says. "As long as they share his passion for and love of baseball, he wants to thank them."
