The Farmers Insurance Open gets rolling at noon ET Thursday. Coverage will be 3-7 p.m. on the Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday and 3-6 p.m. on CBS on Saturday and Sunday.
Here are five groups that I'm fired up to watch:
Group 1
Nick Watney
Tiger Woods
Rickie Fowler
Think anyone will be following these guys? You'd have to put the fire marshal on standby if Mickelson was with them instead of Watney, but the masses will still be gathering to see (arguably) the two most popular players on the tour (Woods and Fowler). Oh, and I picked Watney to win this week.
Group 2
Hunter Mahan
Bill Haas
Kyle Stanley
I'm interested to see if Stanley can recover from his hellacious Sunday at this same tournament last year (blew a seven-shot lead). Plus, he's paired with two guys who can win on any given week.
Group 3
Charlie Wi
John Daly
Seung-Yul Noh
Noh and Daly probably have a lot in common, right? A 21-year-old South Korean Nike-wearing future international superstar and a 46-year-old American-flag-pants-wearing nut. I'd follow this group just to watch the interactions between those two. The over/under on number of words they speak to each other on Thursday and Friday is 11.5. And give me the under.
Group 4
Brandt Snedeker
Phil Mickelson
Bubba Watson
Perhaps Snedeker and Watson can work out a logarithm for Mickelson's finances that will allow him to somehow keep playing golf at this tournament in the future.
Group 5
Jason Day
The international all-star group. This will be the 2013 debuts for Day and Colsaerts. Ishikawa probably wishes it was his debut; he shot -3 last week at the Humana Challenge -- which, for that tournament, is like +13.
