Angel Cabrera withdraws from Players with most ridiculous excuse ever

Angel Cabrera's score on No. 17 might have a lot to do with him leaving the Players Championship early. (CBSSports.com)

It sure has seemed in 2012 that a lot more players are withdrawing from golf tournaments for reasons that wouldn't totally hold up 15 years ago. Anytime a bad round happens this year, it seems the guys are slamming their trunks well before Friday evening.

But none have been as obvious, and hilarious, as Angel Cabrera's decision to WD on Thursday at the Players Championship. The two-time major winner made an absolute mess of the famous island green at TPC Sawgrass, carding a nine on No. 17 after dumping his tee shot in the water and following it up with two more water balls from the drop zone.

He was even par heading into the tricky par 3, played the hole six over, and finished with a 78 that had him miles away from contention and even the cut line, so this announcement came on Cabrera after he finished his round.

"Angel Cabrera is withdrawing from the Players Championship, citing "personal reasons."

This is Cabrera's second withdrawal in the last three events he's played on the PGA Tour. He jumped out early at the Zurich Classic after an opening 75. I'm assuming that was for personal reasons as well.
