Hunter Mahan defeated Martin Kaymer 5 and 4

How it ended: It feels like Mahan is out to send a message to Davis Love III that he was absolutely wrong for not tabbing him as a captain's pick for the Ryder Cup last year. Mahan won five holes on the front nine and never looked back.

Matt Kuchar defeated Nicolas Colsaerts 4 and 3

How it ended: Colsaerts needed a 12-foot par putt on the short 340-yard par-4 No. 15 hole and couldn't find the hole. Kuchar got up early (won five holes on the front nine) and never backed off. He'll face Robert Garrigus in the quarterfinals.

Ian Poulter defeated Tim Clark 5 and 3

How it ended: Poulter went on a run in the middle of the match, winning five of the last nine holes the two golfers played. When asked about whether he was excited about playing 36 holes Saturday he said: "I'd love to be exhausted Monday morning."

Also, this Johnny Miller quote is true on multiple levels:

Robert Garrigus defeated Fredrik Jacobson 3 and 1

How it ended: Jacobson went from one side of the desert to the other on the final hole, No. 17. After hacking at four shots he finally conceded to Garrigus, who never even took his putter out of the bag.

Jason Day defeated Bubba Watson 4 and 3

How it ended: Watson hit it into a cactus (almost literally) on No. 15, couldn't get out, and Day moved on. I've actually been shocked by how many of these matches have ended with one golfer banging it around in the sand and cacti.

Webb Simpson defeated Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano 2 up

How it ended: Fernandez-Castano bogeyed the last hole to give Simpson the win and a quarterfinal date with Hunter Mahan. Honestly, I'm just glad I don't have to type "Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano" anymore.

Steve Stricker defeated Scott Piercy 1 up

How it ended: Stricker buried a 30-foot birdie putt on No. 18 for the win. He then gave a homeless man's Tiger fist pump. It was awesome. He's got Ian Poulter in the next round (and the entire country behind him).

Graeme McDowell defeated Shane Lowry 3 and 2

How it ended: McDowell ended Shane Lowry's 64-seed dreams with an 8-foot uphill par on No. 16. McDowell got his work done early, too, only one hole was decided on the back nine (Lowry won it).

After the match McDowell told Golf Channel:

"It's tough to get the poker face on against a good friend."

Quarterfinal matches will be underway shortly.
