Rory McIlroy's round at the Texas Open on Thursday was a great metaphor for his season as a whole.

He was up (two birdies in his first eight holes), he was down (three straight bogeys on his next three holes), and ultimately he was back where he started (even par for the day).

Here's a look at his scorecard:

McIlroy trailed leader Padraig Harrington by five when he finished his first round on Thursday in his quest to tune up for Augusta National next week.

Playing partner Jordan Spieth had a nice round going and actually led until a triple bogey on hole No. 8 (his 17th of the day) dropped him back to 1 under.

McIlroy should be in no danger of missing the weekend as the cut line last year was 5 over.

Regardless of his outcome in San Antonio, it will be good (maybe even the best thing) for the youngster to play four competitive rounds leading up to the Masters.
