Don't know anything about newly minted PGA Tour winner, Billy Horschel? I'll let Rory McIlroy introduce you.
Horschel and McIlroy got into it a little bit at the 2007 Walker Cup, and the details are pretty spectacular.
Here's McIlroy to GolfDigest recapping what happened:
"I was up against Horschel on the first day, too. I messed up the last hole and lost to him. I wasn't happy. Then I got him again, twice, on the Sunday. His antics were really p----- me off. For example, he had hit a bunker shot at the 14th in our morning foursome. It was a great shot and finished inches from the cup. But he came running down the hill hollering at the top of his voice. He was so loud and so obnoxious."
It's true that Horschel is quite the animated golfer. I go back and forth on this. On one hand, there's nothing worse than a stodgy, old golfer (Jason Dufner comes to mind) who barely lifts an eyebrow at anything between double eagle and double bogey.
On the other hand, nobody likes a loudmouth.
"Anyway, that outburst of his was probably the worst thing he could have done. In the second singles, I set out to be as loud as he was. On the first tee I ripped a drive up the middle, hit my 7-iron approach to maybe 15 feet -- I was shouting 'Be good! Be good!' all the way -- and holed the putt for an eagle. When the ball went in, I gave it the loudest 'Come on!' you've ever heard. I think he got the point."
I love Rory saying "I think he got the point."
"Yeah. It was great to win. Especially against him. I don't really have much time for him to be honest. He seems to be okay off the course but on the course he was using gamesmanship and stuff and it was just ridiculous."
Don't let McIlroy's boyish charm belie the fire that courses his veins. He's as hard-hearted on the course as they come. It's something few athletes have succombed to and what makes McIlroy great.
But Horschel has some game too. He currently holds the longest streak of cuts made on the PGA Tour (23) and has McIlroy by 34 spots in the FedEx Cup rankings.
Yes, it's been a long time since that '07 Walker Cup, but I doubt the feelings have subsided. If there's a golf god, he's going to pair them together for the U.S. Open.
He has to.
