The horn had already blown signaling the end of Day 2 at the US Open and fans had one foot out the gate, but Phil Mickelson saved his best for last.

Lefty buried a lengthy 20-foot birdie putt to get a shot back on his final hole of the day to shoot 72 and tie Billy Horschel for the clubhouse lead at 1 under.

Here's a look at his putt:

Mickelson struggled through three bogeys on his first 17 holes and failed to get hot with the putter.

Nevertheless, after his round Mickelson told Tom Rinaldi of ESPN he feels good about where his game is at.

"It felt great, I wasn't expecting birdie there. I was just trying to make a par, that's a very difficult hole. I got shut out today. I actually played really well. The birdie opportunities, I didn't capitalize on."

As dark descended on Merion though, Mickelson thrilled the crowd (and likely got himself into the final group in the third round -- play was suspended with 71 golfers yet to finish) with that birdie.

One of the men he was playing with, Steve Stricker, was also one of the only two golfers (along with Horschel) to get a full round in on Friday under par. He ended at even par and should be just one off the lead when the third round starts.

The golf course was absolutely wicked on a sunny Friday and so many guys struggled mightily, including Mickelson for stretches.

But he hung around, grinding pars, waiting for the birdies to present themselves. He finally got his on No. 18 and now he'll get to sleep in on the lead Saturday morning.

Just 36 holes to destiny for Lefty now.

Sunday is his birthday, Father's Day; could it be his day?

He has to make it through Saturday first.
