After John Daly withdrew from the Greenbrier Classic on Friday with an elbow injury, there was speculation he would probably miss the British Open as well. Daly even tweeted on Friday that he would probably be out three or four months.
The speculation about 2013's third major became a reality on Monday as Doug Ferguson confirmed Daly's withdrawal.
Daly makes it official. Withdrew from Open today, surgery Thursday, probably out until October at the earliest. Torn tendon in right elbow.— Doug Ferguson (@dougferguson405) July 8, 2013
As bumpy as Daly's career has been, this will be just the third British Open he's missed since 1991 and the first since 1999. (As a past champion under 60, he automatically qualifies.) He hasn't done much there since he won in 1995 (best finish was a T15 in 2005) but at least he was playing.
And as my editor Andrew DeWitt pointed out on Twitter, no John Daly in Great Britain is a sad week for golf:
