Who?!

Yes, Mark O'Meara shot a 4-under-par 67 at Muirfield on Thursday and will probably find himself one off the lead at the end of the day following the first round of the British Open. As a reminder here's a look at how O'Meara's previous 13 Opens have gone since he won in 1998:

1999 -- Cut
2000 -- T26
2001 -- T42
2002 -- T22
2003 -- T65
2004 -- T30
2005 -- Cut
2006 -- T63
2007 -- T60
2008 -- Cut
2009 -- T70
2010 -- Cut
2011 -- Cut
2012 -- DNP

Nothing to really write home about.

And yet he almost tied Zach Johnson for the round of the day if not for a putt on No. 18 that lipped out hard (see above). I'm sure O'Meara was happy to tap in for par and his 67.

Here's a look at O'Meara's scorecard:

That eagle on No. 17 was from about 30 feet and barely trickled in to a resounding roar from the Scottish crowd and a nice fist pump from the 56-year-old O'Meara.

There's a history of former British Open winners in their late 50s competing of late. A 59-year-old Tom Watson famously lost by one to Stewart Cink in 2009 at Turnberry.

That year, Watson shot a 65 in the first round and trailed Miguel Angel Jimenez by one. This year, O'Meara shot a 66 and is tied with Jimenez after the first round.

I don't think O'Meara is going to win this thing, but the symmetry is pretty great.
