Phil Mickelson, a man of the people.

Mickelson has long been known as the social butterfly of a sport that often creates recluses (or even hermits) out of its athletes. That was on full display earlier this week when he made a surprise visit to Callaway headquarters in Carlsbad, California to let all its employees hold the Claret Jug.

Oh, and did we mention Mickelson went wearing flip flops and didn't tell anyone he was coming until the morning of his trip?

Mickelson apparently texted Callaway CEO Chip Brewer on Wednesday morning and showed up Wednesday afternoon.

"I know there's a lot of you," Mickelson said, according to Callaway's Twitter page, "but I want everyone to hold the jug."

No matter how you feel about Lefty, that's pretty cool. There are so many people you never see behind the scenes working on gear and other parts of these golfers' games and it was really great of Mickelson to recognize some of those people -- to take some photos and let them hold his prized trophy.

Here are a few more photos from the visit. You can see more on Callaway's Facebook page.
