Jack Nicklaus says he doesn't know what's happening to Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods is chasing history and history rests on the mantle of one man -- namely, Jack Nicklaus.

Nicklaus is often asked what he thinks of Woods' chances to break his own record of 18 golf majors. He has always said he thinks Woods will eventually do it but he sounded more unsure of himself this week while on a conference call for the PGA Championship coming up in two weeks.

"I don't know what is happening between his head and between his ears," Nicklaus said. "Each person handles things differently. Winning four times this year, he had to have something working for him between the ears. Will he win more majors? I think so. When? I don't know."

The Golden Bear understands that golf is not a game to be toyed with and Tiger hasn't been doing any toying in major championships for quite some time.

And yet, there's still belief -- there always is, and likely always will be for Woods fans.

"Obviously Tiger has had a very, very good year," said Jack Nicklaus. "He's not finished off a couple of majors that he's had opportunity to be involved in."

But Nicklaus said we should not look at Woods losing those majors, rather other men winning them.

"We maybe ought to give Adam Scott and Justin Rose and Phil Mickelson a little bit of credit for playing better. There are 150 guys or so that will start the PGA – all good players and experienced players. … It's not a one-person tournament."

He's right, of course, and yet we often think it is.
