I can't imagine Steve Elkington saying something to get himself in trouble with the golf media world (yes, actually I can) but that's what happened on Friday and Saturday from the 2013 Senior British Open from Southport, England.

Elkington tweeted out a few questionable things and ABC picked them up. Here's the first one referencing some caddies Elkington knows getting robbed:

"Couple caddies got rolled by some Pakkis (Pakistanis), bad night for them"

And here is Elkington's apology:

A statement in Elkington's name was issued 20 minutes after he teed off in a third round where he shot a 1-over par 71 in which the golfer explained he had no idea 'Pakki', more commonly spelt as 'Paki' and long regarded in Britain as a highly offensive term, was an objectionable word."
"I am prepared to adhere to any disciplinary action that the Championship sees fit," Elkington's statement said. "In my tweet I was referring to an unfortunate incident involving a caddie earlier in the week. Being Australian, I was unaware that my use of language in relation to the Pakistani people would cause offence, but having been made aware I now deeply regret the use of that terminology."

A stretch, it would seem, even for Elkington. At the very least you have to be aware that you're a public figure and at least Google whether or not a phrase is offensive.

Elk also was apparently not happy with the city of Southport where the tournament is being played at Royal Birkdale. Here's his tweet from Friday:

"Things about Southport - fat tattooed guy, fat tattooed girl, trash, Pakistani robber guy, sh-t food."

And his response to that:

"Southport is a beautiful place and I have enjoyed playing at Royal Birkdale, as my positive content on Twitter has shown. My comments were born out of frustration over what had happened to a colleague."

I guess I don't see what the two things have in common.

Bernhard Langer leads the tournament and Elkington is probably out of contention barring a Van de Velde-ian collapse by the 10 or so players in front of him.
