The Bethpage State Park was established in 1936.
Its black course is the most famous of its five courses but it wasn't until 2002 that Bethpage Black hosted its first PGA Tour event -- the US Open. Tiger Woods won the event that year and Bethpage Black got the Open again in 2009.
On Tuesday the PGA of America announced that it would take the PGA Championship to Bethpage Black in 2019 -- this will be the 101st edition of this tournament.
The course will also host the 2024 Ryder Cup which will be all kinds of fun. It's kind of strange to think who will be playiing in the 2024 Ryder Cup (not Tiger or Phil, probably Spieth and Fowler) but I'm pretty sure that will be as raucous a Ryder Cup as we've ever seen.
It's good to see two great events to return to such a great course with, um, how shall we say it...such passionate fans.
PGA of America president
Kelly Tilghman tied the loose ends together:
Here's my early nomination for 2024 Ryder Cup captains at Bethpage Black. Phil Mickelson & Sergio Garcia. Make it happen.— Kelly Tilghman (@KellyTilghmanGC) September 17, 2013
No matter the captain, I'm ready for both the 2019 PGA Championship and the 2024 Ryder Cup -- both should be classic events.
