According to GolfDigest Gary Player made over $14 million last year on the game of golf. And according to this story by the AP he now owes a little under 10 percent of that to an old pal.

Player and businessman Dave King have setteled over a $1 million transaction that happened in 1999.

"Lawyer Rael Gootkin says Player and businessman Dave King have come to an out-of-court agreement. King once caddied for Player at the Masters. He threatened to sue the golfing great for $3.3 million and claim some of his South African assets for not paying back what he said was a loan. Player argued it was not a loan but does not deny that the transaction took place."

Nobody knows how much they settled for but, wait a minute, if there's $1 million on the line wouldn't you kind of be clear whether or not it's a loan or a gift? I mean, no matter how wealthy you are.

Perhaps Player really, really needed some new home gym equipment and King footed the bill and things just kind of spiraled out of control from there?

Also, here's some fun with numbers.

Player's career PGA Tour earnings: $1.78 million
Inflation: $1 million in 1999 is worth $1.4 million in 2013

On a serious note, it's nice to see Player get this out of the news. Nobody needs one of golf's former legends leaking money and disputing claims for something he, apparently, did. Good on him for taking care of it.
