No shortage of great stories to end first tournament of 2014

More Golf: Leaderboard | Rankings | Schedule | Equipment | FedEx Cup

We get primetime golf on Monday night and a primetime lineup of stars to match the scheduling.

There's a three-way tie atop the Tournament of Champions leaderboard between Dustin Johnson, Webb Simpson, and Jordan Spieth. All three sit at 14 under.

Johnson is looking to become the eighth golfer to ever win the Tournament of Champions in back-to-back years and, in doing so, would tie Bobby Jones, Nick Faldo, and Seve Ballesteros on the all-time PGA Tour wins list with nine.

That seems like decent company.

Simpson and Spieth are trying to draw narratives of their own, too.

According to Justin Ray of ESPN Spieth is trying to become the third-youngest two-time PGA Tour champion ever at the age of 20 and the youngest since 1932.

And Simpson is trying to snag PGA Tour win No. 5 which would place him as the clear-cut second-best American under 30 behind Johnson.

Ray also noted that the threesome has the following records in 54-hole leads or co-leads:

Johnson -- five wins in seven attempts.
Simpson -- two wins in five attempts.
Spieth -- never co-led after 54 holes.

And if those three falter the other Johnson (Zach) is two shots back and Brandt Snedeker and Jason Dufner are both three shots back. Stars, all of them.

The final round of the tournament will be shown on Golf Channel from 4-8 PM eastern on Monday.

The real show on Monday will be happening east of Hawaii at a place called the Rose Bowl but as far as appetizers go, I can't think of many better than the finish to this tournament.
