To say Rory McIlroy struggled in 2013 is to say Tiger Woods is a big draw for the sport of golf.

I defended McIlroy for most of the beginning of last year because his numbers weren't that far off but even he had to admit by the end of the year that he was slumping.

"This year is a little bit of a disappointment," said McIlroy.

He also said he got rattled throughout the year.

"It was more to do with mechanics of the golf swing and getting into a couple of bad habits ... If you don't play the way you want to your confidence gets knocked and obviously that affects you mentally."

McIlroy continually compares his career to playing 18 holes of golf. He's said a number of times that he's only on, probably, the "third hole" of his career and that there's a long way to go.

He's right, of course, and he also knows that with his talent the wins can start coming in bunches.

"I won a major in 2011 and 2012 but not in 2013, so I'll try to make up for that with two this year," said McIlroy to BBC.

He ended the year on a high note, too, by beating world No. 2 Adam Scott in the Australian Open (see video above).

"Beating Adam Scott down there was really nice and while it doesn't make up for the other weeks during the year, it gives me some momentum for 2014.

"I'm so much better down the stretch and I'm so much better under pressure than I used to be, so If I give myself a chance in these tournaments I know I'll have a great opportunity to win.

So should we expect the wunderkind greatness we once saw from McIlroy to return this season?

"I didn't have the greatest of seasons in 2013 but I feel like I'll definitely make up for that in 2014."

Yeah, we should.
