Rory McIlroy discloses how he proposed to Caroline Wozniacki

What a romantic, that Rory McIlroy.

On Tuesday in Abu Dhabi McIlroy was asked about a number of things, among them his recent engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

So how exactly did the proposal go down?

"I was always going to do it on New Year's, but we weren't actually expecting to be in Sydney. I thought we were still going to be in Brisbane. But Caroline had to pull out with a shoulder injury, and then thought it would be nice to spend New Year's in Sydney.

"And we were out on a boat in the harbour for New Year's and fireworks and stuff."

Pretty legit.

"I guess there was a little bit of romance involved," McIlroy said. "And yes, she was surprised."

"I mean, I had an idea that it might have been what she wanted or it was something she would say 'yes' to. I hoped she would say yes. It all worked out. It was a great way to end 2013, and a great way to start 2014."

McIlroy then displayed a little bit of that maturity we've all come to love from him when discussing marriage.

"It's a big step in anybody's life to make that decision and obviously is not one that you take lightly,” he said. “If you get engaged, you plan on spending the rest of your life with that person, so it's a big decision, but I feel like she is definitely the right girl for me."

McIlroy also told Irish Golf Desk that he feels like 2013 is behind him for good.

"I was thinking of other things [apart from golf] when I really shouldn't have had to. But that's the last year I'm ever going to have go through that. I've learnt from it and am smarter because of it. And it's great that I've gone through it at this stage in my career and not 15 years down the line."

I hope this is true because a McIlroy resurgence would be yet another in a long list of great storylines for the 2014 golf year.
