I believe on Saturday I called it the "full Phil Mickelson Experience," and it was on full display Sunday from Abu Dhabi.
Mickelson went out in the last group two strokes back of the lead and had six birdies on Sunday. He also had one ghastly triple bogey on the 13th hole in which he hit a ball right-handed, double-hit it, and took five shots to reach the green of a par four. All on the same hole.
Here it is:
Mickelson was asked if he'd ever double-hit a shot like that after his round. His answer was incredible.
"You know me, I've done some crazy s*** in my career. I go up and then I go down."
Mickelson went on to birdie three of the next five holes but fell just short of winning the tournament as he lost to Spain's Pablo Larrazabal by one stroke.
The last six holes are about as Mickelson a way to end a tournament as I can think of. Three birdies (including the last) only expunged by that, well, whatever that was on the 13th hole.
Kelly Tilghman summed Mickelson's tournament up quite nicely:
Phil the Thrill gave us birdieless 73, a 63 with 7 fwys & 22 putts & a final rd with triple bogey/3 birdies in last 5 holes #WWPDN— Kelly Tilghman (@KellyTilghmanGC) January 19, 2014
Finally, after the end of a long week in the desert, Mickelson himself reflected on his 72 holes in Abu Dhabi.
"I enjoy challenging myself to hit shots. Sometimes I pull them off and sometimes I don't. This week, I had a little bit of both."
Couldn't have said it any better myself.
