Darren Clarke sees why it would be good for US to win Ryder Cup

There will be a lot made of Darren Clarke's comments to The Scotsman over the weekend but what you need to know is that no matter his affiliation or his allegiance, he's right about what he said.

When asked about the 2014 Ryder Cup, Clarke said he could see why the United States winning it would be a good thing.

"I would like to see another European victory but I can see the argument that it might not be the worst thing for the event if the Americans did win. They are due a break. In the last two cups the Europeans have had the good bounces at just the right moments. But, sooner or later, the Americans will get a wee bit of luck when they need it."

This would be the equivalent of Fred Couples saying he could see the argument that it might not be the worst thing for the world team to win a President's Cup.

It doesn't make Clarke any less a fan of Team Europe because the objective viewpoint, no matter which side you're on, is that it would be good for the event for an American team that's only won once since 1999 (and twice since 1993), to win.

Maybe a bit odd, but not outrageous.

It also sounds like Clarke thinks the Americans have the advantage as it stands right now.

"What is the same at this stage – as it always is – is that the European team looks a bit unsettled and the American team looks strong. But it doesn't matter. At the end of September, the matches will be close."

I don't want to fast forward through the majors but I can't wait for October.
