It's still January but Phil Mickelson is already in mid-season form with the media.

Mickeslon is making his first start in the US this year at Torrey Pines this week and the focus, as we knew it would be, is already on him winning the US Open at Pinehurst to complete the career grand slam.

Mickelson is confident that he's going to get the job done, and not just once.

"I'm excited that the tournament that I've played some of my best golf in is the one that I haven't won and I feel it's just a matter of time.

"It may be this year at Pinehurst, it may not, but I do believe that will come. I actually believe I'll win a couple."

Of course he does. Mickelson, as you know, has finished second six times at the US Open now.

Mickelson also finished second in Abu Dhabi last week after a triple bogey undid him late on Sunday. Other than that, though, he was terrific.

"I drove it the best I ever have Sunday in Abu Dhabi when I needed to hit fairways. With these two areas of my game that I've not been happy with (putting and driving) becoming strengths, I'm more excited about this year than any year ever."

Jim Nantz said on a conference call on Wednesday that he actually thinks Mickelson could win the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach when he's 49.

That would be pretty amazing as the oldest golfer currently to ever win a major is Julius Boros who won the 1968 PGA Championship.

You know he's going to be in the thick of it again at that tournament at some point and that it's going to be as wild a ride as Mickelson has ever given us.

Let the countdown begin.
