Caddie races banned at Phoenix Open

Caddie races like the one you see above from No. 16 at the 2013 will no longer take place.

That's right, the PGA Tour has banned caddies hustling to the 16th green at the Phoenix Open while fans cheer them on and openly place wagers on who will win.

As this Arizona Republic article pointed out, however, that's going to be kind of difficult to do.

"The races began without caddies even being aware of it, which may make them difficult to ban. Fans would bet on which caddie would reach the green first."

2014 tournament chair Tom King concurred.

"That's true. The caddies would be looking around and asking, 'why is everybody cheering when I step on the green?'"

But Andy Pazder, the PGA Tour's executive vice president and chief of operations, said this to the Golf Channel:

"We have advised the folks at Colonial and out in Phoenix to discontinue the caddie races. It was a situation where we developed a little concern about caddies' safety. Running 150 yards puts caddies at risk for injury. I had caddies come to me in Phoenix and at Colonial saying, 'This is ridiculous, it's like we are a carnival show.'"

So let's try to have as little fun as possible, is that the goal?

What will the tournament do to replace the races? King said at the end of 2013 they have some ideas including maybe having a "closest to the pin" competition but there hasn't been an official announcement on what was decided.
