One of the more interesting things to me about major golf tournaments is how the fields can be categorized. You can do it by colleges, equipment, former participants, first-timers, really anything.

Today though, let's take a look at the 2014 Masters breakdown by country.

Here's a look at the field in graphical form. You have total golfers participating on the y-axis and total former champions on the x-axis. Obviously the ideal spot to be is in the top right:

And here's the list:

United States: 44 participants | 10 former champions
England: 7 participants | 0 former champions
South Africa: 6 participants | 2 former champions
Australia: 5 participants | 1 former champion
Spain: 4 participants | 1 former champion
Korea: 4 participants | 0 former champions
Northern Ireland: 3 participants | 0 former champions
Sweden: 3 participants | 0 former champions
Canada: 2 participants | 1 former champion
Germany: 2 participants | 1 former champion
Wales: 2 participants | 1 former champion
Italy: 2 participants | 0 former champions
Denmark: 2 participants | 0 former champions
Argentina: 1 participant | 1 former champion
Fiji: 1 participant | 1 former champion
Zimbabwe: 1 participant | 1 former champion
France: 1 participant | 0 former champions
Japan: 1 participant | 0 former champions
Thailand: 1 participant | 0 former champions

Obviously there's still a little bit of time for golfers to be added to the field but for now this is what we're rolling with.

I'm impressed with the South African showing. I don't know what the breakdown is in terms of popularity of golf in a given country but I bet its ratio of Masters participants to number of people who play golf in a given country is really high, maybe the highest. It's at least close to the United States.

Also, England, it's time to get on the board. You can't let Nick Faldo carry that flag forever.
