What is this 15-inch golf hole business all about?

What is this madness you see in the above photo? No, it's not "Honey, I Shrunk the Sergio" but it is a stab at trying to make golf relevant to a wider swath of sports fans.

TaylorMade and Hack Golf collaborated for a fun little round at the Georgia Reynolds Plantation with 15-inch holes.

It looks odd but the idea is actually pretty fun.

And, if this New York Times article is accurate, necessary.

"But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years."

I don't know what "apt to quit" means but it doesn't take a field study to know that golf is becoming less popular in our turbo-charged society.

Garcia was one of the main participants in the Hack Golf/TaylorMade outing and he's a believer.

"A 15-inch hole could help junior golfers, beginning golfers and older golfers score better, play faster and like golf more," said Garcia.

I'm in on the idea though I'm not totally sure that a small cup is what deters folks for taking the sticks out for a twirl.

To me we have to figure out how to speed the game up so that it takes two hours to play 18 holes instead of two days.
