Tiger Woods' position atop the golf world -- at least in the standings -- is about to be over. It could come as soon as next week and it will likely come at the hands of a non-American.

Here's how the 10 closest players in the world to Tiger stack up right now in OWGR points. The actual points don't really matter -- if I listed them they would mean nothing to you -- focus on how narrow that gap is getting between Tiger and the others.

As the AP points out, only Adam Scott, Henrik Stenson, Bubba Watson, and Matt Kuchar have a shot at catching the Red Shirt at The Players (Jason Day would if he was playing). This chart confirms that.

So what needs to happen for one of those other five guys to take over?

More from the AP:

"Day, who has played only one time the last two months because of a thumb injury, and Kuchar would have to win at TPC Sawgrass. Watson would have to be runner-up, while Stenson would need to finish in the top six and Scott in the top 16."

Scott's last finishes at The Players: T19, T15, CUT, T26, CUT.

So maybe it won't happen that week but somebody who has never been No. 1 is going to assume the throne in the coming months.

Woods took the spot in 1999 for 264 straight weeks and 553 of the next 585 weeks. Since 1999 only he, Vijay Singh, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Martin Kaymer (LOL), and Rory McIlroy have held that position.

No Americans, no lefties, no Australians, no Phil.

Here's a look at who's held it since 1999 and for how many weeks:

So as you can see, a person not named Tiger Woods taking over the top ranking, as will almost definitely happen if Woods doesn't return before the US Open in June, is quite the rare event.
