Jason Day withdraws from Players Championship

Jason Day will miss the Players Championship next weekend as his thumb injury continues to bother him.

Day has only played once since he won the Match Play Championship in February. He finished T20 at the Masters in April.

His thumb was put into a cast shortly after Augusta and it was presumed he would be ready for the Players but on Friday he announced that wouldn't be possible.

This is a bit troubling if you're a Day fan -- the Players is a big boy tournament and pulling out of it is a tad different than pulling out of the Cadillac Championship (which Day also did in March).

It's also a bit worrisome that this injury has lingered so long. You would think that a couple of months of rest and rehab -- save that week in north Georgia -- would be enough for Day to be back to 100 percent.

Day said he's still "a few weeks away" from being ready, though.
