Rory McIlroy's honesty has been on display all week at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in England.

McIlroy shot 68-71 to get to 5 under and well inside the top 10 at the time he finished his second round on Friday. His 71 on Friday included three bogeys, four birdies, a double bogey, and his second straight eagle at the par-5 12th hole.

His strong start is significant for two reasons.

1. McIlroy has never performed well at this tournament by his own admission. "I'm in the top 10, which is rare for me at a course where I have notoriously struggled," he said on Thursday.

2. McIlroy has been undone of late by a single errant score. A 77 there, a 78 here. It's always one atrocious score that undermines his ability to contend late in tournaments. He hasn't posted one of those yet and if he closes like he has been closing he'll have a chance to win a big one.

But it hasn't all been good for the Ulsterman. He announced earlier this week that he and Caroline Wozniacki have ended their relationship and he seems to be carrying that burden around with him (see photo above).

He told The Guardian he hasn't even flipped his phone on since the announcement, and he gave away his computer.

"I haven't put my phone on for two days and have given away my laptop," he said. "It's sort of like living in the '60s and '70s."

Then he went deeper.

"It's part of life, it's s----y, but it is the way it is. I made a commitment to be here. It's the European Tour's flagship event. I'm very proud to be part of the European Tour. The European Tour have been very good to me over the last number of years."

Being Rory McIlroy cannot be all that fun all the time. Yes, he's prodigiously talented at the sport of golf, but he's also hounded by fame in a way that none of us know.

It can be overbearing for a kid who just wants to tee it up and let it rip. He said on Thursday he "just tried to bury my head in my golf."

At times, that will likely be the only respite he gets.
