Rory McIlroy shoots 63, blows away field in first round of Memorial

You want a US Open favorite? I think we have one.

Rory McIlroy has finished inside the top 10 nine times in 10 tries on the European Tour and PGA Tour this season and it looks as if he's headed for 10 of 11 after his performance at the Memorial Tournament on Thursday.

McIlroy used a nice little 32-31 to shoot 63 and open a three-stroke lead on Bubba Watson, Chris Kirk, and Paul Casey.

It was a 63 that included a double bogey and two eagles on the back nine. Here's a look at his card:

If it weren't for that double at No. 14 we would have been on a severe 59 watch coming down the stretch.

It was McIlroy's second straight Thursday with two eagles (he did the double last week at Wentworth en route to his victory there).

He also battled a knee injury all day, something he said he "twerked" (I think he meant "tweaked," or at least I hope he did) on the 7th hole on Thursday.

"I put it out of my mind when I was over the golf shots," said McIlroy. "I guess I just pretended it wasn't there."

Again, guessing he was pretending like the injury wasn't there, not the knee.

As Doug Ferguson pointed out, McIlroy was better than most (okay, all) at Muirfield Village on Thursday.

As long as he can avoid that one bad round that's jumped up and bitten him of late, we could see two straight for the Ulsterman. And wouldn't that be a storyline as we turn to Pinehurst.
