Strange says if Tiger is at Hoylake only to win, he's lying to himself

Not that Tiger Woods needed it, but now he has some bulletin-board material from a former major winner in Curtis Strange.

Strange made some interesting, if not truthful, comments about Woods in an interview with Reuters last week.

The most eyebrow-raising of which was as follows:

"If he goes to Hoylake saying, 'I'm here to win and that's the only thing', that would be him telling a lie to himself."

Well OK then.

He's probably right after how Woods played at Congressional but the way it's phrased is odd, I think. It seems like there's a better way to say that.

"If that was me I would want to play at least one more tournament before the Open to get my game in better shape, to get more strength in my golf muscles," Strange said.

"I don't care how much practice you do, it's not the same thing as playing in competition."

OK, this one I agree with.

Why isn't Woods playing the Scottish Open this week alongside Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler? I know he doesn't love to play the week before a major but if there was ever a time to make an exception to the rule, this would be it.

Brian Keogh noted that Woods has actually played in Ireland before the British Open a few times.

Strange did say that you shouldn't count Woods out but you also shouldn't lay the mortgage on him:

"We learned a long time ago never to say never about Tiger because he's such an incredibly talented player," he said. "He could win it of course but it's not something you could bet your house on, I don't think."
