PGA Tour Expert Picks: John Deere Classic

By Kyle Porter | Golf Writer

The British Open is right around the corner but first the fifth major for Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker.

That's right, here's a preview of the John Deere Classic.

Locale

The John Deere Classic is held at TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. and it has become Steve Stricker's personal playground in recent years. He won three of these babies in a row before Zach Johnson and Jordan Spieth upended his streak the last two years. The worst winning score (worst!) in the last five years is Spieth's paltry 19 under last season.

Another fun fact: This tournament has been sponsored by both Hardee's and Miller Brewing Company. I desperately wish we still had a tournament on the PGA Tour sponsored by a brewery.

Speaking of Spieth

Yes, this is still awesome.

Details

The tournament will take place July 10-13 and the purse is $4.7 million.

You can watch Thursday and Friday (July 10-11) on Golf Channel from 3-6 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday (July 12-13) on Golf Channel from 1-2:30 p.m. and on CBS from 3-6 p.m.

Expert picks

Winner

Jordan Spieth (10-1): Spieth is returning to the scene of his first crime on the PGA Tour (of presumably many) and I think he's going to play really well. He only has four finishes outside the top 20 since the calendar flipped to 2014 and he's coming off a really strong weekend at Congressional just two weeks ago. I've joked here that I'm going to keep picking him until he wins, but I think it's becoming less of a joke.

Lock for top 10

Steve Stricker (11-1): All of the money, every dime of it. Stricker has finished T10, T5, and won three times in the last five years. It's the best bet for a top 10 lock between any player and any course on the entire PGA Tour schedule.

Sleeper

Billy Hurley III (50-1): Hurley finished T4 at the Greenbrier last week and T8 in his only appearance at the John Deere back in 2012. He was a birdie machine for most of the week at Greenbrier -- well, until Sunday -- and he'll need to be again at the Deere given that 20 under or better will probably win it.
