Phil Mickelson is trying to defend his Scottish Open title this year at Royal Aberdeen and he got off to a decent start with a 3-under 68 on Thursday.

Although he yanked a par putt at No. 18 for his first bogey of the day he scrambled like Phil scrambles (well) -- even out of that stuff you see above.

I love the solitude these courses in Scotland offer -- a glimpse into the abyss of finding out who you are as a golfer and what your game is really made of. Maybe that's why I love this photo so much.
