In 2006 when the British Open was at Hoylake, here's how Tiger Woods played the par 5s:

Day three

Day four

4 under

That's 14 under if you're scoring at home. He was 4 under on the other 56 holes, all of which added up to a one-stroke win over Chris DiMarco for his 11th major championship.

Why does this matter? Because it proves that in 2014 you're going to have score and score low on the par 5s at Hoylake.

"I think the par-5s are a big key this week," said Rory McIlroy. "The majority of [Tiger's] scoring was done on the par-5s. There are four really good opportunities to make birdies out there and then there's a couple of tough holes on the back nine. If you can just make par there you're going to do well.

"I don't think it's going to be an option to hit iron off every tee box. I think you're going to have to be slightly aggressive off the tee and take some things on."

Justin Rose agreed.

"If you take care of the par-5s this week, I think that goes a long way," he said.

So did Adam Scott.

"I think that's the one thing we're all looking at -- if we can take advantage of the par 5s."

I think this sets up well for guys like a Dustin Johnson who's just a monster off the tee and has had British Open success in the past.

Something to keep in mind as you follow along the rest of the week.
