There's really no use in denying it because it's pretty clear to everyone watching that Rory McIlroy is mentally lost in the second round of tournaments this season.

How else do you explain some of these numbers?

He admitted it on Tuesday at Hoylake.

"It's more that I just get it in my head and I may be putting a bit too much pressure on myself on Fridays in trying to back up a good score.

"I have no problem shooting a low one on Thursdays so there should be no reason I have any problem shooting a low one on Fridays. I need to go out and pretend like it's a Thursday again."

The ol' "trick yourself into thinking it's Thursday" trick. Maybe he just needs to watch Groundhog Day a few times.

Still, McIlroy said he feels good about where his game is at right now.

"I'm glad I played in Scotland," said McIlroy. "I feel as prepared as I ever have coming into a British Open because I played four competitive rounds on a links course and played in some different conditions.

"I don't think I've evolved that much as a links player but I've been trying, especially the last few weeks, to really practice hard on some of the shots I might need this week."

He hasn't performed particularly well at the British Open in the past, notching just one top 10 finish back in 2010 though he does hold the British Open record for lowest first round ever with the 63 he shot at St. Andrews back in 2010.

His second round that year?

He shot an 80.
