Mark Calcavecchia won the 1989 British Open and as a former champion who's younger than 60 he has an automatic exemption into the 2014 tournament.

Except that he can't seem to get there.

Calcavecchia played in the US Senior Open last weekend and was trying to make it over to Hoylake in time for the British Open but was apparently waylaid by American Airlines.

We've all been delayed on flights before but how brutal would it be to be stuck in an airport trying to get to the British Open?!

He ended up withdrawing on Tuesday and first alternate David Hearn got his spot.

And in case you think he's kidding, I don't think he is (NSFW language).

What a way to go out. Calcavecchia actually finished ninth at the 2012 British Open when Ernie Els won at Royal Lytham.
