Tiger Woods press conferences are less revealing than a gaggle of nuns at your neighborhood pool but he did let one slip past the goalie on Wednesday at the Bridgestone Invitational.

Kind of.

Woods was talking about his swing -- which he's often inclined to do -- and said that back surgery helped him accomplish something he's been trying to do for a while: shorten his swing.

"We've been trying to shorten it over the years," said Woods. "All I needed was to just have back surgery."

He said this tongue firmly planted in cheek but the narrative remains -- Woods is going to have to reinvent himself to an extent over the last 10-15 years of his career. He's also going to have to rediscover his putting but that's another post for another time.

Tiger averaged only 292 yards off the tee at Hoylake recently, slightly above the field average.

He's not the distance player he used to be and a shortened swing will help him do what he must do to win majors -- keep the ball in play and score better.

That might be bordering on a hot take, but it's true and though Tiger was kidding when he said it he has to know it's ultimately going to be good for him.

Woods also said he has been pounding the course every day since the British Open but noted that he's a different man than in the past.

These last two weeks for Woods are going to be pretty fascinating. He tees off at 2:20 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
