You won't have to watch a wounded Tiger Woods play in the Ryder Cup this fall and Tom Watson won't have to worry about whether or not to take him over to Scotland.

That's because Woods pulled out of being considered as a captain's pick for team with a statement on his website on Wednesday.

"I've been told by my doctors and trainer that my back muscles need to be rehabilitated and healed," said Woods. "They've advised me not to play or practice now. I was fortunate that my recent back injury was not related to my surgery and was muscular only."

What he didn't say is that he didn't want to be embarrassed by the fact that Watson was probably going to take guys over him that you've never heard of.

"I have already spoken to Tom [Watson] about the Ryder Cup, and while I greatly appreciate his thinking about me for a possible captain's pick, I took myself out of consideration."

Okay, so it was cool to play Bridgestone and the PGA Championship but not the Ryder Cup? Have his doctors been on vacation for the last fortnight?

No, this was about making the right call at the right time for Woods and for the US team. Good on Tiger for pulling out, better on the US team for not having to endure the drama.

Woods will return to play in Decemeber.
