Paul McGinley makes Ryder Cup selections, leaves off Luke Donald

European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley went slightly off script with his captain's picks on Tuesday as he selected Stephen Gallacher over Luke Donald to join his squad later this month.

The two other selections were Ryder Cup stalwarts Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter.

Those three will join Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Victor Dubuisson, Jamie Donaldson, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer, Thomas Bjorn, and Graeme McDowell at Gleneagles.

This is Gallacher's first ever selection while Westwood and Poulter are a combined 30-15-6 record.

"Stevie's first words to me when I told him he was in the team were, 'That's brilliant wee man'," said McGinley who added that he struggled with leaving Luke Donald off the team.

"Very, very, very difficult call for me to make, but it was one I had to make in the interest of the European team," he said. "His last two words were, 'Go Europe.' I think that says a lot about him."

McGinley also said he went off of "captain's instinct" (whatever that is) for his selections. As Shane Bacon pointed out, who cares what he went off of because this team is loaded:
