2014 US Ryder Cup: Tom Watson selects Mahan, Bradley, Simpson

Tom Watson selected Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan and Webb Simpson as his three captain's picks for the 2014 Ryder Cup.

The three are a combined 8-5-3 in their careers with Bradley and Mahan pitching in three wins each and Simpson providing two.

Bradley and Mahan came in seeming to be locks but it was Simpson who captain Tom Watson said he didn't decide on until Tuesday morning.

"It really came to me this morning," Watson said to the Golf Channel. "I kind of had a revelation this morning."

Simpson said he was pretty excited to get the last-minute call.

"It was one of the greatest calls I've ever gotten," Simpson said. "I was elated -- it was five in the morning. Unfortunately I didn't have anybody to celebrate with."

This will be Simpson's second Ryder Cup after going 2-2-0 in 2012 including two 5&4 wins over the European Team.

It was Bradley, of course, who was the stalwart of that beleaguered team at Medinah. He was noticably thrilled to be back.

"I've made no secret of how important this team is to me," Bradley told Golf Channel. "I think this is a redemption year for a lot of guys who were on the team last year."

Clearly. CBS Sports got exclusive footage of Bradley's caddie during the selection show, by the way:

Redemption was a key theme on Wednesday night and will be for this squad. It was Hunter Mahan whose awful pitch came up short in 2010 that gave his singles match (and the Ryder Cup) to the Europeans.

"There's a lot of great players who could have made this team," said Mahan. "It felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders."

He also said he knows his squad has something to prove.

"Europe has flat out kicked our butt in the last 10 or 15 years," said Mahan.

That they have as the US only has two victories since 1993 which, incidentally, marks the last time Tom Watson captained the team and the last time the US won in Europe.

And according to Bovada the Europeans will once again be a huge favorite (-225 if you're keeping track at home).

Still, the US squad is actually kind of sneaky good. As Justin Ray pointed out, they hold an advantage in the average world ranking department:

As Keegan Bradley noted multiple times in his interview, this squad will be all about avenging the disastrous 2012 loss at Medinah.

"The Ryder Cup has such a force to it," Bradley said. "It's unexplainable to anybody. It's something that can't be put into words."

Mahan agreed. "We can't wait to go over to Scotland and get ready for battle."

Nobody can. Bring it on.
