Tom Watson on Chris Kirk: 'He took it like a man'

Chris Kirk was right on the brink of making the Ryder Cup team for the entire second half of the season it seemed and with his victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship, you thought he might have gotten nudged over the edge.

Heck, if the Ryder Cup standings had been carried out past the PGA Championship, Kirk would have been an automatic selection.

But they weren't and he didn't. Kirk and Brandt Snedeker were the other two golfers presumed to be in the running for the captain's picks that went to Hunter Mahan, Keegan Bradley, and Webb Simpson.

Interestingly on Monday, Kirk even insinuated that if he made the team he wanted to qualify automatically.

That's a pretty strange quote for somebody trying to play his way into a Ryder Cup and when your captain is Tom Watson, well, I just don't know if that was the best way to go about things.

"He took it like a man," Watson said of Kirk. "I have a fundamental belief in our team." He'll need to with how heavily the European Team is favored.
