VIDEO: Golfers try to drive Cherry Hills green with persimmon driver

By Kyle Porter | Golf Writer

Arnold Palmer won the 1960 US Open at Cherry Hills, largely by shooting a 30 on the front nine after making birdie at six of the first seven holes including one at the first hole, a par-4 that he drove.

The 346-yard hole was taken on by PGA Tour pros earlier this week. The catch? They had to use a persimmon driver and balata golf ball.

Rory McIlroy was the only golfer who came close to reaching the green and even he was still almost 50 yards short.

"It's a pretty impressive shot to get it to the green with these clubs," McIlroy said. In 1960 Palmer had help, though. He actually landed it 45 yards short and rolled it up to the green.

Zach Johnson was still amazed.

"I'd like to say I hit it on the screws," said Johnson, "but I'm not sure I did." He went on to say the shot felt "whippy" and that he was humbled by the whole thing.
