Bubba Watson melts down at Travelers Championship
Bubba Watson held the lead at the Travelers Championship and then melted down in a big way on Sunday afternoon.
Bubba Watson was leading the Travelers Championship, and then this happened.
At the par-3 No. 16 hole on Sunday, Watson hit his shot into the water. At the outset of the shot, he said, "Oh, a gust of wind!" then went on to berate his caddie right after hitting it into the water.
He said, "Water. It's in the water. That club."
Then he flew his drop over the green, turned to his caddie and said, "That's the right yardage?!"
Not a good look, Bubba.
After chipping out, Watson had a long double-bogey putt that he missed pretty badly. He then turned towards his caddie and said either "There's just no reason for me to show up" or "There's no reason for you to show up." It's unclear in the video.
As fate (and the caddie gods) would have it, though, Watson went on to triple bogey the hole.
Watson and his caddie, Ted Scott, spoke with PGATour.com's Brian Wacker after the round about the incident.
"I convinced him to hit the wrong club," Scott said told Wacker. "I 100 percent take responsibility for it. It's totally my fault. I got in the way of the painter on that one."
Watson defended Scott after the round and said they were just trying to figure out what went wrong in the process. It was a mistake that cost Watson a chance to win a PGA Tour tournament.
"Did we do the yardage wrong, was it a gust of wind? We were just trying to figure out what was going on," Watson said. "We planned to do one thing and it didn't do it. We mis-clubbed is all."
