Factory worker qualifies for British Open
Not only did this guy qualify but his bosses are paying for everyone in his factory to attend.
Can you imagine living four miles from Royal Liverpool Golf Club where the 2014 British Open will be played and then qualifying for the Open even though you don't play golf for a living?
That's exactly what John Singleton from Moreton did recently.
Singleton, who works in a resin factory, recently went through qualifying to play in the world's oldest golf tournament. He was using a pair of borrowed wedges at the time.
"I’m overwhelmed by it all. It’s a great achievement. I never thought that I would play in The Open. It’s not sunk in that I’m going to play in The Open in Hoylake. At a local course to me. I can’t believe it."
He should be overwhelmed by it all. Singleton is 30 and has never played in anything close to what he'll see next week at Hoylake.
"It’s every golfers dream to play in The Open and I thought that it would never happen to me," he said.
He also noted that if he could skip that early tee time with Tiger, that would be great.
"I'd like to be paired with Tom Watson to be honest. He is a legend and it would be a dream come true for me. I would not like to get up at 5 a.m. with Tiger Woods."
But first he had to ask off for two weeks from his bosses at the resin factory. They gave it to him, thankfully, and they did a lot more.
"They’ve been fantastic, they’ve given me two weeks off work to prepare and play in the Open which is brilliant of them," said Singleton.
"They have also got the staff some tickets so they can all come and support me which I just think is a fantastic gesture."
One of his superiors, a man named Mr. Tweddle, said he's pretty jealous of Singleton.
"We have the same passion, if only I could play as well as he can!
"It’s just amazing. Who would ever think that the guy from the shop floor would make it to the pinnacle of his chosen sport? I just hope he enjoys it."
Like something out of a movie.
I just hope he doesn't get paired with Tiger.
