Thursday was a long day.

I know nobody feels sorry for me, much less those guys playing golf for millions of dollars, but 13 hours makes for a lengthy first round of the US Open. And it's not even over yet.

Play was suspended for the third and final time Thursday at 8:20 p.m. local time at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., with all of the afternoon groups finally on the course.

Play will resume at 7:15 a.m. ET on Friday with the afternoon groups finishing up their first round.

Luke Donald is your first-day leader -- we can't say he's the first-round leader because he only made it through 13 holes on Thursday.

Phil Mickelson trails him by one shot after a 3-under 67.

The conditions, both on the course and with the delays, were difficult for golfers Thursday, which might be one of the reasons you saw such high scoring -- only two golfers who completed their rounds are under par (Mickelson and Nicholas Colsaerts).

There were more than four hours of delays as the morning groups went in for a lengthy 3 1/2-hour break and the afternoon wave took a 50-minute rest as more rain passed through late in the day.

We should be clear of the nasty stuff in Merion for the rest of the week, but we're in for another long day on Friday as they try to settle the cut and head to the weekend.

It's a major, though, so no need to feel sorry for anyone.
