The last major of the year is upon us (where the heck did the season go?) and there are so many fascinating potential storylines to choose from I'm nearly giddy with excitement.

Last year at Kiawah we got an anticlimactic (but dominant) ending to the year when Rory McIlroy left only red numbers and scorched earth en route to title No. 2.

What about this year?

Here are five stories I'd love to see play out over the weekend.

1. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson battle for the player of the year award -- It's been a while since we've had an absolutely classic battle between these two. It would be a fitting end to what has been a year they've shared back and forth. A win for either would lock up player of the year awards. Can you imagine if they pulled a Woods-Bob May from back in 2000 when Tiger lost his mind on the back nine? Social media networks would weep with delight.

One can only hold out hope.

2. Rory McIlroy defends his title -- For all the crap McIlroy has taken all year for his personal life, his struggles on the course, all of it, wouldn't it be fitting for him to raise the Wanamaker with just his middle finger (I know this is impossible) on Sunday towards all of us? He's the defending champ until unseated.

3. Shaun Micheel makes a run -- On the 10-year anniversary of his improbable win, wouldn't it be great if the man who hasn't made a cut all year on either the PGA Tour or Tour somehow found himself in the thick of things on Saturday and Sunday? Wouldn't it be crazy if his only two of 379 starts on the PGA Tour came in PGA Championships at Oak Hill. Heck, he's 750-1 to win the tournament, it would be crazy if he even made the cut.

4. Hunter Mahan gives baby Zoe a big silver gift -- We've beaten the crap out of the Hunter Mahan-baby daughter story but what better cap to put on things than Mahan's first major? I suggested on Tuesday that Zoe (with some padding) could sleep in the Wanamaker trophy. I bet Mahan would drink a few beers out of it first though, if he won.

5. First-timers in a playoff -- If the plot of the year has been Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson then the subplot has definitely been all the first-time winners on Tour. We've had 11 of them up to this point so wouldn't it be great if we had a four-way playoff between future stars like, say, Jordan Spieth, Harris English, Russell Henley, and Kyle Stanley? I'd be all in on that.
