Eye on Golf brings you the best golfers, craziest shots, worst attire, and more from the day that was on the PGA Tour.
Despite an up-and-down final round, Dustin Johnson rolled to a four-shot victory Tuesday over Tournament of Champions top-five staple Steve Stricker.
Things got hairy on the back nine as Johnson's driver faltered on a few holes but a big chip-in on no. 14 (see below) and playing the last five holes in 4 under carried him to victory.
Here are our grades for the first tournament of 2013.
|Dustin Johnson's final round||
400-yard bombs, eagle chips, holding off the Kapalua wizard (Steve Stricker) -- he wasn't super consistent (see below) but proved to be too much for his competitors to overcome on a Tuesday morning in Maui.
Here's the chip on 14 that pretty much put things away.
|Tournament of Champions officials||They did everything they could to get this thing in and get everyone off to the Sony Open in a timely manner. It was only the third time a PGA event has ever been played on a Tuesday, and some of the golfers were a bit irritated, but it was a stand-up performance by everyone involved.|
|Me||For this. Oh, and if anyone asks, I'm retired.|
Both from the sweet Hawaiian landscape...
...and on Dustin Johnson's scorecard -- six birdies, an eagle, a bogey, and a double bogey on his final round.
If you played this tournament you didn't really need to work out either of the last two days. This is the craziest stat of the tournament to me.
|Paulina Gretzky||Does this mean Johnson takes her to every tournament this year? Can you imagine the looks she'll get from Masters officials when she strolls through the gates looking like this?|
From Steve Stricker's skimpy beard to Johnson Wagner's wispy mini-stache, the facial hair on Tour right now is not strong. Dustin Johnson's soul patch does nothing for me, Hunter Mahan's beard looks ill, and God help us if Rickie Fowler starts growing that thing above his upper lip again this year.
Pastel shirt? Check.
Light khaki pants? Check.
White hat? Check.
White shoes? Check.
Good look? Not check.
