If 2014 Open is half as good as 2013, we're in for a treat

British Open: Leaderboard | Photos |  Odds & picks |  Videos & GIFs |  Stories | Tiger

I think sometimes it's hard to remember recent sports memories because of how much is happening around us. I blame Twitter but that's another post for another day.

Before we get cranking on this year's British Open I want to look back and remember how immense last year's tournament actually was.

We were left fufilled in every way because there was nothing that event didn't have. I even ranked it as the best of the last 10 majors at the end of last season.

We got all the quirky stuff that makes the early part of a tournament fun. Charl Schwartzel hit a 450-yard drive and broke a club.

Brandt Snedeker four-putted.

Rory McIlroy putted off a green.

But a tournament, in terms of historical importance, is all about two things. The first is the venue and Muirfield was an absolute classic place.

The second is whether or not the leaderboard on the weekend is elite and the winner is a worthy champion. And oh that leaderboard.

Here's what it looked like after 36 holes:

That's a good, not great leaderboard. Then Saturday happened and here's what it looked like after 54 holes:

Okay, that's a big boy leaderboard. That's what a major leaderboard should look like.

Then that Sunday we got was just incredible. Everybody led. Tiger was in the mix. It looked like Ian Poulter was going to shoot a 62 for a while.

But Lefty dealt until the very end and shut things down in style. He took the drama out of the thing early which is pretty much all this tournament lacked.

But still, it's one I'll never forget.
