Is Caroline Wozniacki behind Rory McIlroy's struggles?
A potential breakup with Caroline Wozniacki might be what's giving Rory McIlroy trouble.
As you've heard by now, Rory McIlroy withdrew from the Honda Classic last week with an apparent wisdom tooth issue.
Twitter -- and social media in general -- was buzzing with the real reason for his early exit.
"He can't handle being No. 1!"
"Caroline Wozniacki problems!"
All rumors, obviously, as most things on Twitter are. And as Adam Kramer reminded us this morning are mostly our fault for believing.
Except that there might be something more to the last one -- the "Wozniacki-McIlroy relationship is on the fritz" one.
I'll let The Independent, Ireland's largest-selling daily paper, take it from here:
Speculation is mounting that Rory McIlroy's meltdown is linked to his romance with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
Ok, we got that much from Twitter, what else do you have?
He had seemed distracted and in melancholy mood the previous day.
Only 48 hours earlier, his sports star girlfriend also crashed out of the Malaysian Open in what was one of the worst defeats of her career.
The former world No 1 was beaten by a competitor ranked 186th.
McIlroy apologised for his meltdown and blamed a toothache, despite being seen enjoying a sandwich a short while before he walked off the course, while Wozniacki claimed she was feeling unwell and had a high temperature.
The pair, who are usually very communicative with one another over Twitter, have not publicly conversed on the social networking site for several days.
True, his last tweet to her was on Feb. 21:
Awesome win by @carowozniacki in Dubai! Never stops fighting out there! True champion! I better get going to warm up for my match now!— Rory Mcilroy (@McIlroyRory) February 21, 2013
Finally, Wozniacki had this to say :
Asked if there were any marriage plans on the cards, she replied: "I think that question will be for him to answer."
There may or may not be more to the story and we may or may not hear more from McIlroy at his press conference at Doral this week.
But at this point, I'm still open to pretty much anything being behind McIlroy's struggles.
