Paul Casey on Rory McIlroy: 'I've never seen a golf ball hit like that'
Paul Casey is no stranger to golf (or winning) and he says Rory McIlroy's drives are among the best he's ever seen.
Rory McIlroy is maybe better off the tee than any other golfer on the planet right now. The PGA Tour has introduced a new strokes gained from tee to green and McIlroy is leading the field by 0.15 strokes per round over Sergio Garcia.
"When Rory is on, it's not a contest," Casey said. "Rory's swing is like a bullwhip. When he times it, it's the best you're going to see. I've never seen a golf ball hit like that."
A reminder that Casey has been around since nearly the beginning of the Tiger Woods Era.
Never seen a golf ball hit like that.
The entire article is a cool look at McIlroy's swing and the science behind it which Casey described like this: "He's the best player in the world at using the ground to create power."
Stuart Appleby's instructor agreed.
"I don't think Tiger ever hit it as far and as straight as Rory," said Steve Bann. "Rory's path (with the driver) is inside and up, so his natural free releasing shot is a draw."
Oh, and what about Ian Baker-Finch?
"Rory doesn't have to go back to a stinger three-iron often," said Baker-Finch. "Even when Tiger was at his best and winning all the time, he went back to that stinger two-iron when he had to."
It's not an overstatement to say that McIlroy's driver is the single most important club for any single player in the game today. If he can continue his dominance off the tee box he'll win majors for the next decade.
That's often easier said than done, though.
