Paul McGinley says Rory McIlroy will 'learn and come back'
Paul McGinley is firmly in Rory McIlroy's corner which is a good thing for Nike's No. 2 star.
McIlroy shot a 79-75 to miss the cut by four shots at Muirfield but as McGinley pointed out to Sky Sports, we've been here before.
"Everybody was saying Rory was playing rubbish (after Lytham), said McGinley. "A month later he went to the US PGA and won by eight."
It's true, McIlroy shot 8 over at the 2012 British Open and finished T60 before running rampant through the rest of the golf season with a top five at Bridgestone and three wins, including that major.
McGinley also said McIlroy just needs some time.
"Looking back, when I was 24, I wish I got to know myself better. That would have helped my golf. Hopefully, Rory will get to know himself really well. Keep doing what works for him. Identify his package, making it stronger and stronger. Rory is not arrogant. He has a lot of common sense and is willing to listen. He will learn and I have no doubt he will come back."
One thing I hate about sports in 2013 is how we try and change the narrative on the careers of these athletes with every shot, every possession -- seemingly every single day. I know those things are necessary (kind of) for the 24/7 sports news cycle but it's frustrating to not let them play out.
It bothers me when we don't let seasons and years and careers run their course before we try to place some historical context around them.
For all we know McIlroy will win 25 of the next 100 majors and go down as the greatest golfer of all time. He probably won't, but let's at least give him the time to do it.
This is some serious lack of golf etiquette from the POTUS
